In 2010, Allagash Brewing and New Belgium decided to come together and brew a beer to celebrate the friendship that has grown between the two Belgian inspired breweries. Vrienden (friends in Flemish) was designed to be brewed in both breweries with slight changes to the recipe at each location. The Allagash version was brewed with dandelion greens and local Maine elderberries and fermented with both our Brettanomyces, and New Belgium's Lactobacillus. The resulting beer has an aroma with both an earthiness and a strong presence of pineapple and lime. The flavor is clean, fruity and punctuated with marmalade. Medium bodied in mouthfeel, it finishes dry, minerally and with a citric tartness.
Allagash is also proud to donate a portion of the proceeds from this beer to a great Maine non-profit, Friends of Casco Bay. Friends of Casco Bay is a marine stewardship organization founded in 1989 to improve and protect the environmental health of Casco Bay (right here in Portland). For more on their mission, check out www.friendsofcascobay.org. 9.3% ABV. Released April 2011.
